What to expect: Social justice issues, growing up, mystery

“The year I turned twelve, I learned how to lie.” A brilliant first line to a brilliant novel. Annabelle, a girl from a small town in rural Pennsylvania, is happy on her little farm. Between her brothers, school and chores around the house, she keeps busy. But when Betty Glengarry moves to town, Annabelle quickly learns that some people aren’t happy. Some people live to make others miserable.

Betty is a bully, threatening Annabelle and her brothers. Betty’s true colors branch out to violate others, including Annabelle’s little brother and an innocent girl from school. Then Betty turns up missing, and everyone begins to suspect Toby. He’s a World War I veteran who keeps to himself in his little shack. He’s odd, and an easy target. Annabelle knows Toby had nothing to do with Betty’s disappearance, and attempts to right a slew of unjust accusations to keep him free and safe. But things are dicey in Wolf Hollow, and it’s only a matter of time before the truth will out.

WOLF HOLLOW is a beautifully written, heart-wrenching book for readers of all ages. Middle grade readers will be drawn to Annabelle’s heart and courage, young adult readers to the mystery, and adults to the crushing dam of emotion Wolk skillfully portrays. Annabelle is soulful and full of childish truth – it’s what drives her to seek justice no matter what. Few adults would be as brave as Annabelle, and her innocent wisdom touches your heart. There are twists and turns aplenty, but the emotions are what draw you deep into the rural countryside. A book easily read in one sitting, WOLF HOLLOW is a gripping and poignant tale of prejudice and redemption. Highly recommended.
