A Captain No Beard Story: Strangers on the High Seas

By Carole P. Roman

Paperback: 32 pages

Age Range: 3-7

What to expect: Pirates, Kindness, Stranger Danger

Apparently even pirates have to learn not to talk to strangers. In Carole P. Roman’s fourth installment of her Captain No Beard series, Strangers on the High Seas, the crew of the Flying Dragon must face the terrors of the notorious pirate ship Shark Bait. Together the clever crew outwits the menacing pirate Barnabas the Scurvy Dog and steers clear of danger. Along the way, Captain No Beard must look after a rambunctious young cabin girl named Cayla. First Mate Hallie gently reminds the captain to be kind to her and after all, the more the merrier, but Cayla proves despite her youth and inexperience she’s capable of more than the crew expected.

This book is perfect for parents and caregivers searching for ways to discuss stranger danger with young children without causing anxiety. Teaching kids not to talk to strangers, and even how to identify a stranger, may be challenging. Roman’s story is peppered with helpful phrases like, “Keep our distance” and “We don’t speak to people we don’t know,” ensuring young readers understand the message without instilling a fear of the unknown. After reading Strangers on the High Seas, children will feel empowered, much like the crew of the Flying Dragon, to identify someone they don’t know and determine how to respond. The prevailing theme of Roman’s superb book series is one of camaraderie and cooperation, which gives children a comforting sense that we’re all in this together. Her heartwarming books will continue to inspire and delight readers both young and old.
