What to Expect: Friendship, change, gardens.

A Little More Beautiful is a story about change—but not the loud and busy change of activism and politics. Instead, it is about the small, quiet, private changes each person can make themselves to make the world brighter.

Lou Alice woke up each day determined to make the world a more beautiful place. Even when no one noticed, even when people said “no,” Lou Alice worked in secret, planting a garden to make the world beautiful and the people in her town smile.

Then, one day, Lou Alice had to move to a nursing home. She could no longer do the work of making the world beautiful. The only person who missed Lou Alice was one little girl. She had seen Lou Alice’s work and decided to take up the baton that Lou Alice could no longer carry. With her help (and still without anyone noticing), the town became a more beautiful place once more, including for Lou Alice herself!

Breezy Brookshire’s glowing, softly colored watercolor illustrations bring the story richly to life, filling each page with the ordinary, everyday, cozy beauty of a well-tended landscape, emphasizing that the beauty in nature is not just about wildness but also about the relationships of human beings to their environment. The simple and minimalist text encourages readers to experience this message as much through seeing and thinking as through reading.

A Little More Beautiful: The Story of a Garden is a picture book that does, indeed, leave the world a little more beautiful than it found it.
