What to Expect: Nature, Animals, Flowers, Alphabet

From A-Z, the natural world is full of interesting things to spot! For ‘A’ a little black ant contemplates a big red apple. A caterpillar crawls across the page towards a sunny, yellow daffodil. A ladybird sits on a leaf, and a mosquito perches delicately on a spotted red mushroom. From dragonflies to frogs, violet ground beetles to zebra butterflies, this book is bursting with beautiful representations of the wonders of nature.

Natalie Trovato’s An Alphabet in Bloom uses exquisite cut-paper illustration in bright primary colours to invite young readers into the natural world. More than just an alphabet book, however, this volume doubles up as a captivating game of “I Spy”: over each of the pages, representations of different letters pose unaccompanied by any text or even a single letter to identify them. Instead, at the end of the volume, a page provides a long alphabetized list of items to be spotted in each picture. Lacking explanation or guidance, the book challenges readers to match unfamiliar pictures to unfamiliar words, with only their knowledge of the alphabet to guide them. Interactive as well as beautiful, the beautiful little book will help young readers build vocabulary, strengthen observational and critical thinking skills, and teach them about the natural world. Utterly lovely.
