Annie Aardvark loves math. Counting, adding, subtracting . . . it doesn’t matter because she loves it all. Readers get to join her on a foraging excursion and count everything that she finds. The goal: to count up to ten. Will she get there?
Using only her nose to sniff out some of her favorite things, she finds an aardvark cucumber, rocks, sticks, berries, flowers, and more. Using her tongue, she counts the found items:
Beetles: “One! Two! Three!
Then, after counting each item, she makes a sound:
Termites: “One! Two! Three! Four! Five! Six!” Smack! Smack! Smack! Smack! Smack! Smack!
She then moves on to find the next thing and keeps going until she finds ten of the same item.
The author, Suzie Olsen, is a systems engineer who currently works on the search and rescue system for the US Coast Guard. With a passion for encouraging students—especially girls and minorities—to consider careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields, she taps into the hearts and minds of the youngest readers by providing this simple counting story written in a systematic style. The character she created, Annie Aardvark, is approachable and likable and children will surely want to count along with her. Annie Aardvark is named after Annie Easley, a fellow mathematician, computer programmer, and rocket scientist. The author’s note at the end of the story provides a brief summary of Annie Easley’s background and accomplishments that will be of interest to children in pre-k or higher, as well as adults reading the book with kids.
With full-color digital illustrations and large font, preschool-aged children will readily engage with this math/STEM primer.
