Jennifer Morse, M.S., PhD, challenges readers to venture beyond the traditional fairytale story of Cinderella. She encourages readers to envision more depth for the princess and, in turn, for the readers themselves. Morse, who is trained as a marriage and family therapist and has spent her life studying mysticism, tells of how Cinderella came to encounter the Fairy Godmother and how her deepest desires were fulfilled.
After the interesting coincidence of a mother and her two girls asking for help from the king and queen, Cinderella’s parents, the queen falls ill and passes away. Not long after the king marries the newcomer and he, too, falls ill and passes, but not before suggesting that there is something sinister at play. Cinderella’s new stepmother will not get rid of Cinderella because her inner beauty is so rare; instead she hopes to absorb this beauty by keeping Cinderella close. Destined to remain a slave to her stepmother and stepsisters, Cinderella must learn to work through her grief and find beauty and light from within the darkness. Perhaps, fairytales come true only when we are ready to allow such wonders to enter our lives?
Morse’s writing flows like a series of connected thoughts. Her pensive language has a contemplative quality that aims to encourage reflection:

In Awaiting the Fairy Godmother, Cinderella exudes personal strength that she obtains through nature, animals and strong self-awareness.
