What to expect: Bodily Functions

Justine Avery is the author of many books for kids and adults, and she is undoubtedly on a roll (pun intended) with this picture book addition.

There are so many natural and incredible things going on in our bodies all at once. The way our bodies function is purely fantastic—including digestion and defecation. Moms, dads, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunties, animals … everybody poops. Poo shame is not something kids are born with, it’s something they learn. This picture book unabashedly takes the shame away. With bright, often humorous (if you enjoy a little bit of potty humor) illustrations, readers see humans of all ages and genders sitting on toilets, potties, and using nature (you gotta go when you gotta go). Even the land and water animals poop!

Author Justine Avery wants readers to walk away from story time with poo pride! And we think that they will. The rhyming text is confident, catchy and to the point. It’s really quite fun to say the word poop or poops or poop-poop more than thirty times in one sitting—and certainly not a strain.

This picture book would make a fun addition to the home library of those who are potty training and those that have a notorious “poop holder” in the house. Be prepared to giggle along as young readers go poop-spotting through the pages.
