What to expect: Spunky Girl Character, Knights, Adventure, and Drama

Ready to start bridging the gap between picture books and chapter books? Genny and Bug’s Big Adventures: Genny Faces the Green Knight offers a longer story, in picture book format with plenty of colorful illustrations and dramatic adventure to boot.

When Genny goes on an adventure, she always brings her favorite toy, Bug. She packs her backpack with all the things she will need for the day. The pair begin by entering the tunnel in her room, and when they come out on the other side, they find themselves in a new world in the time of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere and the Knights of the Round Table. Soon Genny and Bug discover that they are not the only two out for a daily adventure. Courage and bravery will be required if Genny is to defeat the Green Knight.

Author Darrel Gregory starts this story with a clever description that immediately and intelligently connects readers to the protagonist: “Genny is sometimes shy and sometimes bold. She is sometimes still and quiet, and sometimes playful. Sometimes she needs help and sometimes she can do things all by herself. But there is one thing that Genny always is – adventurous!” From this moment on, curiosity and mystery build until the suspense kicks in, and then a mighty battle takes place, ending with a just-right finale that will have readers inspired to go on their own bedroom adventures. The digital illustrations work well to draw the reader further into Genny and Bug’s adventure—dramatic, cheery, and mysterious in all the right places. Genny’s warm yet subtle rosy cheeks glow with delight against her beautiful chocolate skin tone, and she almost always has a smile upon her face.

If you love the message that the most important thing about an adventure is to start, then Genny and Bug’s Adventures: Genny Faces the Green Knight will surely appeal!

About the Author

Genny and Bug’s Big Adventures: Genny Faces the Green Knight is Darrel Gregory’s first children’s book. Through the characters Genny and Bug, Darrel hopes to inspire children to say an overwhelming “yes” to exploring the world around them and undertaking their own hero journey. You’re never too old or too young to take the first step, believes Darrel. At 58, he is embarking on a new journey down a new path. “I want children to have a profound sense of awe and wonder in the natural world, and to begin to develop a sense of purpose through play and imagination. I think stories can help achieve that.” Darrel hopes to write additional stories in the Genny & Bug’s Big Adventures series.
