Hey! Don’t Forget the Sunscreen! is a narrated play-by-play of one little girl’s experience of learning about the importance of wearing sunscreen. Why grab a boring pamphlet to explain the harsh effects of the sun when you can reach for Kimberling Galeti Kennedy’s kid friendly anecdote?
When Stacey sees her Aunt Donna is wearing a bandage on her face, questions abound. The inquest begins with “What is wrong?” This leads to a didactic and thoughtful response from the straight shooting, always smiling Aunt. Sun damage is discussed and the three forms of skin cancer are introduced. As the pair converse in a back-and-forth dialogue, Stacey learns that being proactive and taking head of preventative measures is the best form of protection against sun damage. Kennedy has created a polite but curious protagonist with her young female character Stacey. Stacey’s curiosity and spunk will endear readers—she is definitely the glue that holds the readers attention as they learn the pertinent lessons of the dangers of unprotected sun exposure, as well as how to protect one’s self against these dangers. The brightly colored cartoon illustrations bring a good amount of cheer and set a friendly tone. The free audiobook download that is included with each paperback copy is a nice touch for those that like to deepen their auditory reading experience.
Parents and caregivers that have ever struggled with slapping sunscreen onto a squirming child will appreciate Kennedy’s Dr. approved educational resource disguised in a story.
