What to expect: Mayan Empire, Civilization

Are you ready to travel back in time to the year 572? If you are, you’ll learn all kinds of interesting things about the Mayan Empire. Readers get to insert themselves into this non-fiction book to imagine what it would have been like to live during the Mayan civilization.

Thanks to the fact that the Mayans were the only ancient American society with a written account of their history, award-winning author Carole P. Roman has a lot to share about the people that once lived on the Yucatan Peninsula. From carefully chosen names, careers, housing, worship, family life, cuisine and cooking, farming, attire, language, slavery, and status, each page is chock full of educational information. The end pages detail some of the Mayan’s most important contributions to the world—they were incredible mathematicians and they also mapped the nights skies without the aid of a telescope—as well as some of the most well known Mayan warriors, leaders, and royalty.

Due to the informational delivery of text, Roman remembers to stop and ask the reader questions and this establishes a connection with the words and engages the reader in the educational experience. She has selected a large font which helps spread the information across the pages and prevents overloading the reader with too many facts per page. She also introduces a new illustrator to the If You Were Me and Lived In … series: Paula Tabor’s digital illustrations are often overlaid on photographs and are a very similar style to what fans of this growing book series are used to with Kelsea Wienrenga’s artwork. Every page has artwork to set the scene and bring Roman’s writing and the Mayan Empire to life.

If You Were Me and Lived In … The Mayan Empire is a great choice for classroom and book report studies.
