This beautifully crafted book uses black-line illustrations on clear panes of plastic to depict memorable scenes from both Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts. There’s Dobby on Harry Potter’s bed and Harry riding Buckbeak over Hogwarts. There’s an adorable Niffler from Fantastic Beasts, ready to look for sparkling treasure. Pickett, the Bowtruckle, also springs to life. With each delightful image there is an accompanying quote from the scene. Fans can relive those magical moments as they shine a flashlight through the pane.
At the end of the book there is a clear pane so that readers can draw their own favorite magical creature, and project them on the wall or ceiling.
The book is wonderfully interactive. Smaller children might need some help learning to shine the flashlight correctly through the pane, but it’s a great bedtime activity for kids of all ages. I found that non-LED flashlights worked best to create a more detailed image. The construction is sturdy and flips well, and the projection films are excellently done. The whole family will enjoy taking turns reading the scene and quote, and then shining their favorite characters on the wall.
What I liked most about this book was that it portrayed the lighter side of the Wizarding World, which is a great help before bedtime. We don’t want to have nightmares about Lord Voldemort!
Combine this book with a reading from your favorite Harry Potter book, and you’ve got a magical time ahead of you. And what a marvelous gift idea for the Potterhead who has everything! Highly recommended.
