What to expect: Patriotism, Civics, Social Studies

Amazed by how the American people came together as a country after the tragedy of September 11, 2001, Kristen Bowden Sharp found her calling as the Super Citizen Program’s “Libby Liberty.” Kristen tours in a big blue bus and, dressed in her role as “Libby Liberty,” she takes to the stage, sings songs and teaches children about freedom and what it means to be American. Libby Liberty: In Search of Super Citizens is a reflection on these lessons. It offers a solid first look at the duties of citizenship.

Using a candid conversational approach, the reader is invited to take the last seat on the big blue bus and road-trip around the United States in search of Super Citizens. The trip begins with a stop at the White House where the President is introduced. Readers then meet scientists at the Smithsonian Museum, America’s Military men and women at the Veteran’s Memorial, farmers, doctors, volunteers at a voting booth, and a teacher at an elementary school. Both men and women of varied ethnicities are represented in these myriad roles, and, most importantly, the reader gets to see him or herself on the final mirrored page to catch a glimpse at another Super Citizen.

The information included in this book, and the ease with which it is presented, make it a useful tool for discovering the important roles of citizens around the country and highlighting that every person has a part to play. The language is clear and concise and lends itself to being read independently or out loud for a group story time lesson—the latter can be easily enhanced by the free downloadable songs from the Libby Liberty website.

For use in the classroom or at home, this picture book is a good resource for showcasing the everyday heroism that surrounds us in our own communities and beyond.
