Author Honey R. Adewole has put together a spry collection of short verses for the mischievous minded that might be seeking a snicker or two.
The book is separated into three segments: The Naughties (“Being naughty has never been so much fun.”), The Gritties (“Being gritty has never been so easy.”), and The Notables (“Being notable is the new cool.”). Each rhyme presented in Materbeampater is a bite-sized fable, cautionary tale, or simple piece of nonsense meant to amuse. From naughty Peter Scramble who loves to gamble to slack nose Linda with the uneasy finger, the verses involve cranky mothers, bed bugs, and a serious case of nose picking.

Bent and stuck in her slack nose.”
Materbeampater will most likely be enjoyed by an experienced ear that appreciates old school humor. Although the illustrations and content often appear to be about younger children, the clever play of words in Adewole’s poetry is full of innuendo and open to interpretations. Parents may prefer that the deviousness of the characters be better applied to a reader who has, perhaps, already learned their manners and social skills. Be prepared for some rambunctious fun!
