What to expect: Compromise, Animals, Humor, Picky Eaters

Three kids picking out lunch? That’s hard. But three monkeys? That’s even harder – it’s pure monkey business!

Milo, the oldest monkey, only likes to eat crunchy foods. Lettuce, broccoli, and more are all on the menu. Sister Mimi only eats sweet foods (fruit and whipped cream, yum!). And littlest brother Max will only eat, you guessed it, bananas. How will these three ever compromise?

Being the eldest and the ring leader, Milo attempts to create a lunch that everyone will love. First up is a delicious and healthy salad filled with crunchy veggies. But Mimi sees an opportunity for sweetness in the form of whipped cream and strawberries. Add in Max’s bananas, and Milo’s salad has turned rather unappetizing. When they try to make sandwiches, it’s more of the same. Ice cream! Bananas! Yuck! Lunch is served, but no one is happy, and everyone is super hungry.

But compromise is at hand, and each little monkey pitches in to make a yummy pizza by decorating their own slices. Crunchy, yummy, and Banana-ful (yes, even on Max’s pizza) individual slices on a big pizza are a big win! Everyone’s happy, and everyone can agree on what to have for dessert: Banana splits!

Trevor Lai’s bright and animated characters leap off the page and draw little readers in. Preschoolers will delight in the hilarity of bananas on pizza and ice cream on sandwiches. The absurdity is not lost on them and is the biggest appeal of this book beyond its absolutely adorable little monkeys. And with the lesson of compromise thrown in the mix, you’ve got a great read for storytime! MONKEYS LOVE TO EAT is a fun romp through meal compromises and picky eating for all.
