What to expect: Relationships, Zombies, Vampires, Werewolves, Dystopia, Horror

In this novel written for fans of the dystopian-horror genre, Cash delivers a gripping story with a Jurassic Park vibe. He grabs his readers’ attention from the first killer chapter with vivid descriptions of werewolves living in a desolate swamp area. All is well until a boat with a film crew shows up and discovers the pack. Fast forward a few chapters and a small town has just become home to a soon-to-open theme park filled with vampires, zombies and werewolves. Yes, welcome to Monsterland:

“Monsterland will be a gateway to the future of many different world issues, lending the way to solutions.”

On the surface, Cash’s novel appears to be written for pure amusement; however, he manages to explore social and political structures that make the unbelievable story of a theme park where one can walk amongst zombies and be chased by werewolves, feel fairly believable. Typical horror story suspects can be found in this novel: a doctor living the American dream, who has an interest in oddities and now owns Monsterland; a jock/bully; a group of geeks; pretty girls with smarts; and a step-father trying to connect with his two stepsons. The variety of personalities makes for some interesting plot twists once Monsterland opens and vulnerabilities become apparent.

Cash’s stories often sit in the sweet spot between young adult and new adult novels. Monsterland is decidedly for the young adult audience, although the feast of characters will engage adults, too. It’s important to note that there is a solid splattering of gore throughout the pages and a dash of mild romance, the kind that all cult horror movies from the 80’s contain.

Monsterland contains solid ingredients for a horror feast: stupid teens, smart teens, a little challenged romance, family dynamics, action, blood and gore. Will civilization ever be normal again? You’ll have to read it to find out. We dare you!
