What to expect: Self-esteem, acceptance, and friendship

Three rather un-cute little monsters wait for a loving home in a toy shop crowded with the latest and greatest toys. How will they ever find a child to take them home and love them forever?

Three little monsters have sat high on the shelves of a toy shop for a long time – too long! They’ve seen so many toys leave with happy children, and they long to be held and loved by just the right boy or girl. It seems that their crooked teeth and matted fur are a bit of a turnoff, no matter how fun and loving they are inside.

The monsters decide to take matters into their own hands: time for a makeover! With the help of some of the more glamorous toys, like Hollipop (a fashionable doll), they update their wardrobes and slick up their appearances. Now they know they are ready to be chosen by a boy or girl, and they are ready to love and be loved! Luckily, one little girl chooses all three monsters to come home with her. They become best friends and enjoy all sorts of fun. Everything is perfect until the unthinkable happens: their fancy clothes and slick appearances have worn out! They fear that she will no longer love them, but surprise! She loves them just the same because she loves them for who they are on the inside, and the more unique they are, the better.

This sweet book will delight children with its message of love and acceptance. The rhyming is fun without being forced, and the story is quick enough to keep even the smallest children interested. The illustrations are beautiful and bright, almost like a cartoon. Little children will be enamored with the almost-famous look of the stuffed monsters. The little girl who takes the monsters home is adorable with her funky outfit and neat glasses. I appreciated how diverse the illustrations were.

An excellent choice for a preschool class, or a sweet snuggly story before bed. Highly recommended.
