Ned is a book-smart turtle with a very introspective way of thinking. He is truly fascinated by the world around him and is especially interested in studying the butterflies that inhabit the meadow on the other side of the forest. Ned is intrigued by the fact that butterflies can carry 100 times their body weight. He adventures over to the meadow and, as he waits patiently, a monarch butterfly finally lands on a flower next to him and he begins to take notes. Enter loud and fun-loving Rosco the puppy. As Rosco cartwheels onto the scene singing a song, Ned’s long awaited moment of serenity is shattered and so begins the story’s true tale of accepting differences and finding a balance between learning and living.

The author, Robin Robinson, does a nice job showcasing that education is very important—especially when it stops Rosco from jumping into a river that is too shallow—but that the true essence of learning comes from experience. With her clear, straightforward storytelling, Robinson carefully illuminates the strengths of two very different personalities to teach acceptance and introduce the concept of harmony. The illustrations are soft, colorful and energetic in all of the right places and the layout of the large print text is visually appealing.

This is a book that will appeal to many different children on many different levels: nature lovers, adventurers, introverts and extroverts. Caregivers will enjoy sharing this book with young readers, ages 3 through 7, because of its deeper layers of friendship and respect.
