What to expect: Penguins, Scientists, and Adventure

Noodles’ & Albie’s Mermaid Parade is the third installment in a picture book series about the adventures of penguin and fish pals, Noodles and Albie.

In this installment, Jon and Ken, world-famous penguin experts, are finishing up a stint of research on the Antarctic ice. They are hoping to make it home to Brooklyn for the Mermaid Parade—Ken hasn’t missed the parade that marks the annual summer opening of the Coney Island amusement park in years. Noodles and Albie would like to go to Coney Island, too, so they join the crew aboard a ship and stop in several places along the way. Through conversation between the penguin experts and the animals, readers learn interesting tidbits like how many types of penguins there are in the world, and the meaning of words like aquatic and feisty. Before too long, more penguins join the crew aboard the ship heading toward the grand finale of the Mermaid Parade.

Through adventure, ocean travel, and the goal of reaching the special parade, this picture book provides a creative introduction to what animal research, particularly the research of penguins, can look like. Color illustrations that compliment the text, can be seen with every page turn, making this a good choice for a read-aloud session.

Noodles’ & Albie’s Mermaid Parade could be the book that inspires a new wave ofornithologists, marine biologists, or marine ecologists.
