Arrrgh mateys, it’s time to climb aboard the Flying Dragon as Captain No Beard returns with a tale of friendship and patience.
Devoted readers of Carole P. Roman’s first book will be delighted to follow the adventures of the captain’s same ragtag crew of scallywag shipmates: Mongo the Monkey, Linus the Lion, Fribbet the Frog, and his first mate Hallie. Just as in her previous book, this band of pirates demonstrates hard work, cooperation, and loyalty. When Captain No Beard introduces a new crewmember, Pepper the Parrot, she must learn patience to become a true and faithful pirate. Patience may be a virtue, but Roman conveys a valuable lesson for tired and grumpy children prone to sudden, angry outbursts. Unable to follow the captain’s orders, Pepper breaks down in tears of frustration. Hallie kindly teaches Pepper a clever technique with her wing to help her remember her left from her right. She offers simple instructions to control your temper: not to get angry, but ask for help and wait. Their fine-feathered friend acquires a new moniker, Polly, after she successfully and patiently, flies to the portside of the ship. Roman concludes her imaginative and humorous series as Alexander (A.K.A. Captain No Beard) and Hallie play pretend pirates with their stuffed animals over a lavish banquet of crackers.
Pepper Parrot’s Problem with Patience is filled with vibrant illustrations that lend an animated spirit to Roman’s heartfelt book, but it’s her thoughtful and perceptive storytelling that will make readers return to it again and again.
