What to Expect: Fitness Chart, Assessment Quiz

Author Steven C. McCartney has created a 12-step healthy lifestyle plan for all ages and fitness levels. His goal is to inspire healthy well-being and promote longevity through the use of physical education.

The book begins with an explanation of what the pages provide and how the plan can be used. Through McCartney’s 12 step plan—1 step per page or double page spread—readers will gain an understanding of his “Physical Literacy” philosophy, which combines health and fitness objectives by embracing multiple aspects: enjoyment, healthy eating, staying hydrated, and challenging readers to embrace various elements (air, land, water, snow/ice). The focus of this particular plan is on dance, but the philosophy can be transferred to any sport.

To familiarize readers with the plan, a fitness chart has been provided, as well as an assessment quiz, a physical literacy glossary, and a fill-in-the-blanks, 12-step pledge sheet. Readers can use the pledge sheet to create their own plan of action to achieve a long-term personal sport/fitness/lifestyle goal. The pledge is as simple as filling in the blank spaces with the name of your favorite sport or fitness activity.

By showcasing that sports skills can influence other facets of learning and greatly influence lifestyle, it is clear that the author is a passionate fitness guru. The philosophy encourages taking ownership of one’s health and becoming a lifelong fitness enthusiast through the use of a sustainable plan. Readers learn that the key is making exercise a part of one’s lifestyle as opposed to a get fit quick regime. “Remember the quality of your physical education is directly proportionate to the effort you are prepared to put into it.” Building support teams to reinforce commitment to the plan is another positive takeaway.

Physical Literacy 12 Steps Pledge Ambassadorship: I Dance for Physical Literacy is a useful teaching tool that physical education teachers and caregivers can use with their middle grade through high school students to connect the dots between fitness, health and lifestyle.
