Interview Kelly DiPucchio

The Children’s Book Review | October 16, 2018

The Children’s Book Review: Which five words best describe Poe Won’t Go?

Kelly DiPucchio: Preposterous, pink, powerful, playful and pachydermish.

If you had to take a vacation with one of the characters from Poe Won’t Go, who would it be? Why?

I would love to go on a safari vacation with Marigold because she seems like a great kid and her ability to communicate with animals would be helpful if we encountered a charging rhino or accidently stepped on a python.

What has been the best reaction from a reader, so far?

Most people are surprised by the ending so it’s been fun for me to watch their reactions. I’d say the best reaction would have to be the most common reaction I get and that’s laughter.

What’s on your nightstand? Any books?

There are always books on my nightstand! I’m currently reading Beyond the Bright Sea by Lauren Wolk. I also keep a collection of crystals, rocks and reading glasses on my nightstand.

For your writing energy: sugar or salt, tea or coffee?

Most definitely strong coffee and an occasional Pop-Tart.

Writing tools: computer, pen and paper, or all of the above?

All of the above, plus my three dogs. (They’re my beta readers.)

Can you tell us one more thing we may not know about Poe Won’t Go,your writing style, or yourself?

When I’m thinking about my stories and what to write, I twirl my hair into knots.

Poe Won’t Go

Written by Kelly DiPucchio

Illustrated by Zachariah Ohora

Publisher’s Synopsis: When an elephant plants himself in the road and refuses to move, the people of Prickly Valley try all sorts of methods to get him to go-but one thoughtful little girl works up the courage to do what no one else has done: ask him.

Balancing both hilarity and sensitivity, Poe Won’t Go has the feel of a contemporary classic, reminding readers that there is power in one, power in listening, and power in being a friend.
