Reading Eggs helps kids learn to read independently through fun, interactive educational lessons that teach phonics, sight words, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, reading fluency, comprehension, spelling, and grammar. Animated characters provide repetition and plenty of positive reinforcement in a way that makes the learn-to-read experience feel more like play than work. This safe, kid-friendly digital learning resource is trusted by tens of thousands of schools and used by ten million children—it is both computer and tablet (IOS devices) friendly.
Users can begin with a 30-day free trial and can add up to four children on one account. The parent dashboard lets users select Reading Eggs Jr. for kids ages 2 to 4, Reading Eggs for ages 4 to 7, and Reading Eggspress for ages 7 to 13—there’s also Fast Phonics for emerging and struggling readers ages 5 to 10. While very similar, they each have some slight differences—the focus of this review will be on Reading Eggs.
Each child takes a placement test with Reggie (a fun-looking and sounding egg) that assesses what they know about reading. No reading skills? No worries. Your kiddo will start at lesson one. Kids with some reading skills will be placed in a lesson that is just right for their ability. With every learned skill, they will progress through a map earning golden egg incentives. These well-earned eggs can be used to dress up their avatar, decorate their ‘home,’ and plenty of other opportunities that will excite kids to keep on learning. There are also puzzles, awards, songs, stories, and so much more to engage young readers. The songs and stories are pretty humorous and help kids review their newly learned skills. Kids are particularly drawn to the ‘Driving Test’ that assesses aptitude—with every correct answer, your car moves from the starting line to the finish line.
To promote handwriting, an element that many digital resources lack, there are hundreds of activity sheets included free with a subscription. The Reading Eggs Workbooks help combine all the essential skills your child is learning on the Reading Eggs digital platform and reinforce proficiency and build confidence through the print form. The workbooks are also great for those times when the internet goes down.
The parent dashboard is a helpful resource that shows each child’s progress and provides access to bonus activity sheets, homeschool guides, and lesson overviews. Users can also adjust settings here to allow access to the additional learning games and the digital playroom. Included in the free 30-day trial is the Mathseeds math program for kids ages 3 through 9. Parents can choose to subscribe to just Reading Eggs or Readings Eggs and Mathseeds.
Entertaining and engaging, the Reading Eggs platform is genuinely egg-cellent! It is great for homeschooling families and an excellent supplement for any in-person and remote school learners. Highly recommended!
