What to expect: Military Family, Germany, Friendship, and Transitions

Rubi Johnson and her military family have just moved from the United States to Augsburg, Germany—her father is an American soldier—and they live in an apartment building with fellow Americans. They meet their native German host family, Mr. and Mrs. Kramer and their son, Peter, who will help them learn about German culture and how to speak German. The Johnsons eat new meals like schnitzel and spaetzle—they learn to cook them, too—and Rubi and Peter become best friends.

Two years later, when the time comes for the Johnsons to return to the United States, Rubi is saddened that she will no longer be able to spend her time with her best friend. Her father reminds her that the move “home” will mean she is able to see her grandparents and other family members again, and this helps tremendously. Upon her return, Rubi soon realizes that she can connect with Peter through a video chat. She also discovers, through an exciting surprise, that she has made a lifelong friend, no matter how far the distance is between them.

Written matter-of-factly, Rubi’s Best Friend highlights the friendships and cultural delights that can come from living in a different country. The sprinkling of German words and their meanings that are embedded within the story are likely to be enjoyed, too. While transitions can be difficult, author Sonya Thompson focuses on the positive aspects that change can bring. This would be an encouraging story for any young readers that are embarking on a change with their family.
