Saving Dr. Warren … A True Patriot

Written by Jeffery J. McKenna

Age Range: 12+ | 336 Pages

Publisher: Jeff McKenna | ISBN-13: 978-0999901205

What to Expect: Historical fiction, time travel, magical realism, patriotism.

Steve is an eight-grader with a passion for history. He is deeply patriotic, immensely knowledgeable about his country’s past, and a powerful writer as well. When Steve wins a 9/11 essay-writing contest his penchant for patriotism takes a bizarre twist, and his prize-winning essay catches the attention of a secret society and the guardian of a time-travel talisman. Armed with a musket ball of extraordinary power, Steve is able to travel back in time to experience the Boston Tea Party, the ride of Paul Revere, and the beginning of the American Revolution for himself, as well as exploring other pivotal moments in American history, from WWII to 9/11. Through his riveting adventures, the stories of the men and women who have fought for US freedoms and values are brought vividly to life.

It can be easy to forget, when sitting in a school history classroom, that history is about real people with amazing stories and not just about facts and figures. The best historical fiction reminds us of this by bringing the stories of the past to life and inviting us to imagine the thoughts, feelings, hopes, and dreams of the people who came before us. With its gripping and sometimes heart-wrenching narrative, Saving Dr Warren reminds me of Lynne Reid Banks’ classic The Indian in the Cupboard series. Backed up by meticulous historical research and illustrated with real archival photographs, the novel uses believable and sympathetic characters and an exciting time-travel narrative to bring history to life and also to illuminate the common threads that underpin American patriotism.

This volume would make a great classroom aid, but Saving Dr. Warren … A True Patriot is also a riveting read in its own right and sure to be a favorite with historical fiction enthusiasts.
