What to expect: Mice, a lesson in kindness

Squeaky and the Stinky Mouse is a picture book for beginning readers that chronicles the important lessons a mouse learns about being kind and helping others. This book is the first title in the Squeaky Tales series and is written by a sister-brother duo.

Late one night, Squeaky goes foraging for food. There is always plenty of food to be found. He collects some of his favorites—bread, graham crackers, and broccoli—and takes it back to his hole to eat. One morning, a very hungry “stinky mouse” knocks on his door and asks for help. Squeaky turns away the mouse on account of its bad smell. Later on, when Squeaky gets into trouble with a mousetrap, the stinky mouse is the only one around to help. But will he help after Squeaky treated him so poorly?

The text and story are unpretentious and easy to follow. The message of the book and the author’s intent can be best summarized through this quote:

“When I was little, my mama told me to always help whenever I can, because one day I might need help, too.”

There are simple digital illustrations on every page that add color to the story and describe the text visually for those that are not yet reading independently.

Caregivers seeking a story that delivers a clear and concise message on being helpful could use Squeaky and the Stinky Mouse for a read-aloud; and independent readers seeking a short story that may introduce them to some longer words, and also offers pictures, could enjoy this tale, too.
