What to Expect: Adventure, responsibility, gratitude, animals, exploration

Most kids want to avoid doing chores but learning about responsibility is an important part of growing up. Adventures of Steven and Rex: Blast Off! invites readers to feel gratitude for what they might take for granted in their everyday lives.

Steven and Rex don’t want to stay at home doing boring Sunday chores—they want to be out and exploring the exciting wide world! They escape in Steven’s cardboard rocket and fly to a nearby purple planet called Indigo. Yes—no chores here! Unfortunately, escape isn’t so easy—there are fierce animals everywhere, eager to arrest them for trespassing and sentence them to more chores as punishment! As they run from one punishment to the next, Steven and Rex get into deeper and deeper trouble. Perhaps doing chores with Mom wasn’t such a bad way to spend a Sunday after all.

Using humorous make-believe scenarios that escalate on each new page, The Adventures of Steven and Rex gently reminds readers that you can never really escape from your responsibilities. Nostalgic pen and watercolor illustrations reminiscent of comic book images bring the fantastic settings of Steven and Rex’s adventures to life with subtly funny details (like the cutlery that one of the Wolf Soldiers has tucked into the brim of his helmet).

Overall, Adventures of Steven and Rex: Blast Off! is a gentle way to remind young readers that responsibility is an essential part of life.
