What to expect: Animals, Adventure, Life Lessons, and Rhyming Text

The Lobster and the Elephant is a rhyming chapter book filled with adventures that are ideal for newly independent readers.

Mr. Lobster, who also goes by Lucas, longs for an adventure. When he leaves the ocean and sets out to explore the lands beyond, he meets Noelle the Elephant. Together, this unlikely duo travels far and wide through the desert and forest, and even over a mountain. They meet some new friends along the way who are in need of advice, which the pair of travelers happily provide. A grouchy cricket discovers he doesn’t need to stay mad, a ladybug learns to share, and a mountain goat realizes it’s always best to tell the truth.

Author Karl Wielecki has created a set of thoughtful characters that are brought to life with enjoyable rhyming text, which allows kids to read with animation and expression while also working on the literacy skill of prediction. The writing also has a substantial sensory appeal that is enhanced with simple, digital color illustrations that catch the eye.

Where the elephant walked, the wheat grew so high,
When it swayed in the breeze it tickled her thigh.

Butterflies fluttered from stalk to stalk.
Above them circled a red-tailed hawk.

At their feet grew wildflowers galore,
And tea olive shrubs gave a scent to adore.

The gentle swoosh when the wind bent the wheat
Was the only sound their ears did meet.

The Lobster and the Elephant encourages both adventure and kindness while also imparting the message that there is no place like home. This beginner chapter book provides a fun and thoughtful story for readers ages four through nine.

When not writing, he can be found shooshing his two miniature dachshunds so he can go back to writing.
