What to Expect: Science, nature, social responsibility.

Did you know the sun and moon are actually best friends? Or that the colors in a rainbow are seven playful kids who like to play on the waterslide after it rains? How about that the Earth’s seasons and days are part of a beautiful dance she shares with the sun to make him feel less sad about not being able to dance? And the creeping plants that grow up trees? They provide company for the poor, lonely old trees! All through nature, science has important lessons to share about being kind, supporting others, and embracing diversity and difference.

In The Science Playground, four simple short stories take important facts about nature, biology, and physics and transform them into anthropomorphized stories about friendship, family, and togetherness. At the end of each short story, two simple, accessible fact paragraphs reveal the scientific truths behind the story and offer a social responsibility moral as well. The collection uses simple language and dyslexia-friendly text to help even beginner readers build their literacy alongside their science knowledge, and bright digital illustrations add an atmosphere of fun and positivity.

Overall, The Science Playground is a fun and accessible text for combining science learning with social-emotional instruction.

About the Author

Suparna’s passion for science, and curiosity for things around her, led her to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. She is a wife and mother of two children. Suparna loves being involved with her kids’ activities. Inspired by their constant questions about natural phenomena, she started making up stories to answer their questions in a fun and interesting way. She discovered that she could easily incorporate the ideas of empathy, kindness, and inclusiveness in her stories – values that she believes should be instilled in people from a very early age. She loves reading (of course), music, gardening, and traveling.
