In his first children’s book, The Slip-Slide Misadventure of Mildew Goo, author R. Douglas Jacobs pays homage to the nursery rhymes and bedtime stories of his youth. He has concocted a rhyming fable of a determined soap-sud and a helpful spot of mildew.
Being a slippery soap bubble in a shower is incredibly risky business when your destiny is most likely a “forever trip” down a gurgling drain that somewhat resembles a black hole.
“For what awaited Soapy Suds, and all like him,
Was the round cavity of a foe
Whose blackness beneath the hole of his rim
Caused them only fear for what loomed below.”
Lucky for Soapy Suds, Mildew Goo is a humble guy with advice at the ready; he offers guidance and a helping hand in navigating the perils of the shower stall. Jacobs’ story teaches readers that humility and a willingness to aid others in trouble are rewarding attributes to have—but, with a twist in the story and an intentional cliffhanging moment, readers are left with some serious pondering to do. Written in clean (pun intended) four-line stanzas with illustrations by cartoonist Nicholas Voshall, this book would be best read aloud to an audience of older children.
It takes gumption to turn bathroom scum into likable characters, so credit goes to Jacobs for his creativity in imagining up the vulnerable Soapy Suds and grungy Mildew Goo.
