The Thunder Maker is a tale that explores the power of sound and learning to speak words of kindness, including knowing when to apologize.
The Thuumps are imposters that echo the sound of thunder and impersonate storms. While they do this, they also take people’s personal belongings, especially their good energy. The true user of the Thunder Maker, Princess Nahy-tro, has the mission of capturing these pesky Thuumps. She uses a special set of mythical tools to do this.
When a wild, surprise storm hits a small town, a classroom filled with students and a teacher begin to worry about their safety. Little do they know that it’s the Thuumps causing the storm effects. These invisible critters want to use their negative energy to turn the town’s people against each other. And it seems to be working. That is until the storm ramps up even more as Princess Nahy-tro takes control of the situation.
Suzanne Rothman’s writing is both artsy and mystical. The large font size and well-spaced layout makes this an easier read for beginning readers. The text is sprinkled with thought provoking lines that elicit the idea that fighting fire with fire will only bring about explosions, and that storms will brew when mistakes are made and not owned. Both the glossary at the end of the book and Rothman’s encouragement to build a “dictionary habit” when reading new vocabulary are excellent tips for new readers. And the Storm Checklist included within the pages is a bonus takeaway, too. Fans of myths and legends will enjoy tackling this preternatural tale.
