In Who Stole the Bees’ Wings?, author Jeff Falyn and mother-daughter illustrators Dezla Falyn and Lyndsay Dawkins have created an enchanting and amusing book sure to captivate young children and the adults that read to them. The story begins as Blue Flower tells Frog that the bees are gone; without the bees, she cannot make seeds, and the food chain will become disrupted. In a classic cautionary tale style, Frog sets forth on an adventure to find Know-It-Owl and to solve the problem of the missing bees. It turns out that the bees are not missing at all; somebody has stolen their wings. But who?
The Falyn family has crafted a well-paced story that blends real-world environmental issues with fantasy elements that keep kids turning pages. This simple story focuses on the idea that “little can do big things.” Both younger and older readers will surely take that away from the positive messages in the book (such as teamwork from the forest animals as they work together to solve the problem of the missing bees).
Young readers will appreciate and relate to the unique inclusion of drawings from child-illustrator Dezla Falyn, who brings a raw energy to the pages that only a young person could deliver. The combination of childish, swirly, spiral faces on the animals blends well with the more refined watercolor backgrounds created by her mother, Lyndsay Dawkins, helping readers decode Jeff Falyn’s fantastic written words.

Let me state this upfront; Jeff did not steal the bees’ wings. He does have a long history of writing whimsical eco-stories for young children.
