Wild Boy: The Real Life of the Savage of Aveyron tells the true story of the famous “wild child” known as Victor of Aveyron, discovered in the rugged mountains of southern France just after the French Revolution.
The boy went naked winter and summer, never seeming to feel the cold. He climbed trees, scaled mountains barefoot, and loved living in the wilderness. He was twelve (or so people guessed, for no one knew exactly) when he was finally captured. Taken to Paris, the boy who was called a wild beast had to learn to live in the human world—or risk being shut up forever in the dark dungeons of the city’s notorious insane asylum, Bicêtre.
An adventure tale that also raises important questions about the limits of science and what it means to be human, Wild Boy: The Real Life of the Savage of Aveyron includes stunning illustrations by Timothy Basil Ering, illustrator of Kate DiCamillo’s Newbery-Medal- winning The Tale of Despereaux.
About the Author
Mary Losure is the author of The Fairy Ring, Or Elsie and Frances Fool the World (Candlewick, 2012), which was named Booklist Editors Choice Top of the List, Best Youth Nonfiction, 2012. She’s now at work on another book of middle-grade narrative nonfiction with a child hero, Isaac the Alchemist.
