Carly Ashley Myers would much prefer it if you called her Katelyn. Right from the day she came home from the hospital, her name was spelled incorrectly. She was also nicknamed things like “Cutie,” “Baby Cakes,” and even “Car!”
“Who wants to be named after an automobile? Seriously!”
So she took things into her own hands, combined her two best friends names—Kate and Lyn—to form her newfabulous name: Katelyn. Her mother and grandmother play along; she begins signing Katelyn on her artwork at school, and eventually only answers to Katelyn (and just a few other special names of endearment).

Keri Collins is children’s book author, parent advocate, and all-around champion of taking action. She believes everyone – children, teenagers, and parents – all have incredible power in how they live their lives. It’s a matter of perspective, and it’s a matter of choosing one small action – a sparkle, if you will – and letting it grow from there.
