What to expect: Self-empowerment, Affirmations, Inspiration, and Taking Action

Carly Ashley Myers would much prefer it if you called her Katelyn. Right from the day she came home from the hospital, her name was spelled incorrectly. She was also nicknamed things like “Cutie,” “Baby Cakes,” and even “Car!”

“Who wants to be named after an automobile? Seriously!”

So she took things into her own hands, combined her two best friends names—Kate and Lyn—to form her newfabulous name: Katelyn. Her mother and grandmother play along; she begins signing Katelyn on her artwork at school, and eventually only answers to Katelyn (and just a few other special names of endearment).

“I still answer to “Precious” and “Beautiful,” because I am both of those things!”

Katelyn is a determined, confident, and wonderfully self-assured role model that will encourage young readers to be their true authentic selves. The illustrations show cheery, supportive faces, and depict Katelyn with a true sparkle in her eyes.

The back matter includes “Katelyn’s Take Action Tip” on how and why you should always speak your truth, as well as information on the next two stories about Katelyn: Butterflies in the Tummyand Can’t Fall Asleep.

Beginning with a quote from the dedication spread—“It is completely possible for one small SPARKLE of action on one ordinary day to alter the shape of everything that follows.”—adults and children alike will find joy in this spunky story that aims to empower readers to take their actions into their own hands. Even the endpapers are decorated with affirmations such as: create everyday, find your fun, love yourself, always be kind, and say your truth. Read it and be inspired!
