Ahoy! Captain No Beard and his crew are back. In the latest installment to Carole P. Roman’s award-wining series, Being a Captain is Hard Work, readers learn it’s okay to make mistakes, especially when you learn something from them.
Captain No Beard is determined to make it to Dew Right Volcano, but his crew is not sure this is a good idea. Mongo spots stratocumulus clouds and determines that bad weather is ahead. Unwavering in his goal, Captain No Beard disagrees and declares the clouds are nothing but fluffy and white cumulus clouds. The other crewmembers try to warn him, too. Alas, the Captain is being stubborn. As conditions worsen, young Zach is discovered holding onto the mast with one hand trying to save the ship’s torn flag from blowing away in the wind. At this point, the Captain begins to realize that his goal of reaching the volcano has put his crew at risk.
In her imaginative pirate series, Carole P. Roman always weaves a wonderful story with well-disguised lessons to learn. This time readers will ascertain that it’s important to know when to change plans and to listen to those around you, as they may be offering very sound advice. Wonderful crewmember Hallie delivers a fantastic line: “Why do you think you have two ears and one mouth, Captain?” The extra scientific add-on at the end of the story—a handy list of different cloud formations—is a welcome addition. And Bonnie Lemaire’s illustrations are as bright and colorful as usual.
Story-time listeners and readers will enjoy this entertaining tale. After all, the answer to Hallie’s question above is to listen. We can’t think of a better way to encourage such a great life skill than with a reading session of Being a Captain is Hard Work.

About the Illustrator
Bonnie Lemaire began her career as a freelance illustrator with her first promotional post card in 1989. She graduated from Ontario College of Art’s communication and design program in 1992 and took a position as artist/designer with Ganz and Brothers Canada. It was a valuable experience, catapulting her into a successful freelance career where she applied all her experience, hard work and versatility into a variety of new directions. Bonnie’s eternal optimism is the foundation of every drawing. Flowing from her pencils and tips of her brushes into her creative and eye catching pieces, comical and curious creatures dance on the page. Children’s book illustration is her passion. Integrating eccentric creations within fantastical stories brings smiles to small faces, and delight to her readers all over the world.
