What to Expect: Multigenerational, animals, adventure, bravery

Eve’s Ducklings is a beautiful springtime tale focusing on Eve’s desire to interact with the ducklings she and her grandfather encounter on their walks in the park. What makes this story such a delightful read is how the author has made Eve’s character relatable to many children, and perhaps even to ourselves!

Every day Eve and her grandfather walk in the park and encounter ducklings. Eve wants to hold, pat, and hug the cute ducklings but all of her attempts are unsuccessful. Her final attempt results in a fall into the cold water of the pond. Eve resolves to watch the ducklings from afar, until a few days later, she is able to work up her courage and try again. Finally, she is successful and Eve is able to celebrate her victory with her grandfather.

Eve’s Ducklings is an approachable story that highlights the importance of not giving up. Readers watch Eve’s failed attempts to interact with the ducklings and they are able to celebrate with her when she finally overcomes her reluctance to try. In addition to a solid storyline, engaging illustrations help this picture book convey the message in a manner that will have readers giggling at times while still sympathizing with Eve’s plight. The illustrations show Eve’s emotions well enough that the reader can feel her disappointment and finally celebrate her success. These illustrations combined with the author’s use of simple text make this an entertaining and relatable adventure that appeals to all age levels.
