Hungry Henry is a delightful story about a young boy named Henry who falls to sleep and begins dreaming. Not long into his slumber, he runs into a sheep made of blueberries and bananas who is basking in the sun. As Henry continues on his adventure, the young boy runs into a graham cracker moose with antlers made from apple slices, a grapefruit octopus, an owl with giant egg eyes perched on a pretzel branch, and a waffle turtle. All of Henry’s food friends lead him to realize that he is starving. Eventually, he wakes up to his growling tummy to discover that his mother has made him breakfast and to his delight, it includes many of the foods from his dream.
Marla Osborn’s story is an excellent example of how our desires can often play out in our dreams. Osborn’s artistic and playful photographs do an exceptional job of bringing this story to life. The lively artwork will have your children running to the refrigerator or cabinet to find a healthy snack and will likely spark some creativity too. Don’t be surprised if you see a blueberry sheep or a graham cracker moose galloping across your child’s plate after reading this lovely tale. This read is sure to bring a smile and perhaps a bit of hunger for a healthy treat to young children who are learning the importance of a healthy and balanced diet. This captivating tale is highly recommended as a snack time read at home or school.
