The IF YOU WERE ME AND LIVED IN… picture book series is a great choice for any child that has ever wondered what it is like to live in another country. In award-winning author Carole P. Roman’s latest installment, young readers get to experience the hustle and bustle and beauty of China, or, as it is officially named, the People’s Republic of China.

With her background as a social studies teacher, Roman selects important and culturally appealing facts to share with the intended audience of elementary school aged kids. China has a lot going on, so there is plenty of factual information to take in: population, climates, language, historic sites, multiple cooking styles, and the Chinese New Year, to name a few. The informative essentials are presented in short matter-of-fact sentences that are easy to digest. Text fills one side of every double-page spread and is offset by a multi-media illustration that offers visual hints of the cultural experience one could expect if they were, indeed, in China.

As in all of the books in the series, Roman does a nice job of posing questions to the reader. This provides the reader with an opportunity to go deeper into the text and really imagine himself or herself in China. The extensive glossary is another way that the readers can immerse themselves in the cultural experience—pronunciation and meaning allow for greater understanding and additional fun that can last beyond one reading session. The only thing that could improve a story time session of this book would be following up with a delicious fried ice cream from a great Chinese restaurant.

If You Were Me and Lived In … China is an easy read and a fun way to introduce the People’s Republic of China to children.
