Author Suzanne Rothman has crafted an interesting way to deliver the message of being positive no matter what happens through her main character, Little Chef. In this whimsical tale, Little Chef must learn to make the best of the ingredients that come his way each day.
Little Chef lives in a giant picnic basket. Daily, it seems, he is handed something that would likely leave a bad taste in one’s mouth. Things like: “a triple decker peanut butter sandwich which had already been chewed” and “a giant meatball stuffed with fresh calamari.” When Little Chef faces these unsavory moments he must remember to “separate the sweet from the sour.” To do this he practices positive thinking by using his family’s mantra:
“…Savor the wild thyme.
Make the day sublime!”
With her artsy writing style, Rothman doesn’t shy away from being creative with language and challenging young readers and listeners with large or interesting words. A glossary of these words can be found in the end pages to explore and deepen the vocabulary of young readers. Language is also explored through the use of rhyme. Each page includes a simple color illustration to match the text.
Little Chef: Watcha Cooking? is a story for young gastronomes. It would be best read aloud with a tower of chocolate chip cookies on hand, but you can hold the “cold mood milkshake.”
