My Second Year of Kindergarten is a picture book with a specific goal: to create an encouraging and supportive story to be read to children that will repeat kindergarten.
All children learn at different rates and in different ways. Some children are more ready to start kindergarten than others. Others may appear ready for school, but then become overwhelmed by either the emotional or academic side. And, of course, some kids blossom and exceed parents’ expectations. No matter how a child adjusts to kindergarten, author Rebecca Eisenberg, MS, CCC-SLP—a certified speech language pathologist, instructor, and parent of two children—sets out to empower children that will return to kindergarten for a second year.
Each challenge the young boy featured in the book experiences in his first year of kindergarten, he overcomes in his second year of kindergarten: “Last year, I couldn’t hold a pencil right. / This year, I can write my name on the line without any help!” Andrea Alemanno’s illustrations highlight each step of the journey through body positions, facial expressions (the boy can be seen looking frustrated while sitting for story time in his first year, but sitting upright and smiling during his second year), and the hues of color (the illustrations for the first year of kindergarten are dulled and muted, while the second year illustrations are brighter and therefore more inviting). The overall message, through both the words and the artwork, is cheerful and reassuring.
My Second Year of Kindergarten is a useful resource for any parent—including parents of children with special needs—that wants to boost their child’s self-esteem by helping them see the many positives that will come from a second year of kindergarten. There are helpful tips for parents at the end of the story, as well as a reading guide/activity book which is available for free download via the mysecondyearofkindergarten.com website.

About the Author
Rebecca Eisenberg, MS, CCC-SLP is a certified speech language pathologist, certified autism specialist, author, instructor and parent of two children.
She has been practicing in the field of speech language pathology since 2001 and works with children with special needs in a variety of settings including preschools, elementary schools and outpatient clinics. She has multiple games and a workbook published by Super Duper Publications. She is also the co-author of the children books titled, The Monkey Balloon and the sequel, A Tale of The Monkey Balloon which was released February 6th, 2018. She also published an e-book for parents titled, Improve Your Child’s Language and Learning in 20 minutes.
Rebecca has always loved and treasured children’s books, specifically those that embed a meaningful lesson in the story. Her passion lies in finding those moments to connect with children through storytelling.
