What to expect: Fantasy, Magical Powers, Mystery

The Words of the Wandering is the third compelling book in author D.E. Night’s The Crowns of Croswald series. Royalty, dragons, a battle of magic quills, and a growing darkness are elements bound to capture fans of the fantasy genre—and it’s an excellent choice for fans of Jessica Townsend’s bestselling Nevermoor series.

Once again, Ivy Lovely finds herself in danger. Everything meaningful to her—family, the Kindred Stone, and a life full of magic—has been kept at a distance. She must unveil more of her family’s cursed history if she is to find the third and final piece of the Kindred Stone before the murderous Dark Queen. Ivy must practice the skill of teledetecting—a magical ability that allows her to enter into a sketchbook—to learn from memories that seem to be her only hope of dethroning the Dark Queen and taking her place as the rightful heir to the throne.

D.E. Night has been carefully world-building since the first book, and the result is a believable realm where readers can readily immerse themselves. Ivy’s family history plays a more significant role in this third book and provides an intriguing backstory to this complex saga. There are think-on-their-feet characters, action and intrigue that create a page-turning experience, and prose that is often thought-provoking. “The power of pointing your thoughts where you want to go is magical in and of itself.” There are glimpses of a brewing romance between Ivy and her friend Fyn. However, with the dramatic cliffhanger ending that indicates a fourth book is highly likely, readers will need to wait and see if the pair will have a chance to connect more deeply.

For as many questions are answered in book three, new ones have arisen, which means readers will definitely be wanting more from author D.E. Night.
