What to expect: Animals, Rhyme, and Babies

The Sweetest Bird is a retelling of a traditional fable. If you’re not quite ready to answer the question “Where do babies come from?” Mr. C provides a jazzy, up- tempo “stork” story that rhymes and jives along.

The stork sure is a snazzy and loveable guy. He is well dressed and, if your family is expecting, he brings babies on demand. Sometimes he comes late, occasionally he shows up unannounced, but he always shows up with a smile and plenty of love (he’s often humming a song, too).

There are classic pink and blue references:

“His two favorite colors

Are pink and light blue.

This is for good reason.

Believe me it’s true.

I will try to explain,

Don’t mind if I do.

The pink is for girls

And for boys, baby blue.”

There is a reference that shows not all families are alike—it could represent bi- racial families or families with adopted children. An illustration shows a brown horse mama pushing a stroller in which a white unicorn with a rainbow mane is seated. The text reads:

“Sometimes your babies They look just like you.

And sometimes some things Might be under review.”

Thanks to the wonderful cast of personified animal families, no matter what your family looks like, readers are likely to connect with the bright colors and many happy smiling faces. The Sweetest Bird makes for a vibrant and lighthearted reading choice for kiddos on the verge of welcoming a sibling.
