If You Were Me and Lived in Russia is the latest installment to a great picture book series that showcases diversity and encourages children to explore the world. After the recent 2014 Winter Olympic Games, most children will be familiar with the country of Russia and will readily absorb fun facts about this far-off country that is host to many different nationalities and ethnic groups.

Award-winning author Carole P. Roman kicks off the information by pointing out that while known for its cold weather, Russia is so large that it has nine different time zones and the climate varies from warm to cold. As in all of the other books from this series, kids will get to try out Russian names and practice calling their mothers and fathers, mamochka (ma-moosh-ka) and papochka (pah-poosh-ka)—so fun to say! Readers also learn to spend rubles (money) on traditional Russian hats with earflaps. Moscow is visited, flavorful food is explored, ice hockey is played, Matryoshka dolls are collected, and traditional holidays are celebrated. The most important part of this book—and all of the If Your Were Me series— is throughout the various cultural experiences and differences showcased, the children featured and situations encountered are familiar and remind us that we are all very much the same.

This is a fun and informative book written in a clear and digestible format for children ages 4-8.
