Hobart wants nothing more than to be a hero and get accepted into Knights’ School—in part because being a knight is cool, but mostly because he is tired of being the ignored youngest child of a pig farmer that is tormented by the lord’s son and frequently pelted with rotten tomatoes. Unfortunately, being a hero isn’t so easy: maidens are mostly pretty good at looking after themselves, swords are hard to come by, and there are hardly any dragons or ogres near his town. In desperation, he sets off to kill the only dragon that lives nearby, collecting along the way an almanac that consistently gets the weather wrong, a magical satchel that never runs out of turnips, a very talkative horse, and a couple of true friends. He also learns that being a hero is about more than flashy adventures.
Set in a mythical medieval fantasy world, The Legend of Hobart brings modern humor to a familiar backdrop of castles, dragons, and damsels in distress. Hobart is an endearing protagonist whose honesty and self-deprecation invite readers to relate to his failures, disappointments, and—most importantly—the lessons he learns. From sensing the needs and desires of others to becoming compassionate and self-confident, Hobart takes readers on a journey that is entertaining and inspiring.
