We’re living in a golden age of great fiction … so many beautiful works being published every month, and it’s become a real paradise for readers, whatever they like to read.

I’d love to say I get to take full advantage of that, but it’s sometimes a struggle to balance my own book deadlines against the hunger for great stories to read. Still, I make time for things I really, truly crave, and I’m pleased to share a few with you.

Six of Crows by Leigh BardugoSIX OF CROWS

    Written by Leigh Bardugo

Leigh’s work has always thrilled me, but in Six of Crows, it feels like she’s reached a new level … a daring, brilliantly crafted heist story, an unforgettable family of fully realized characters, a world so immersive that I vanished inside and didn’t come out until the last page (and then with reluctance). Can’t wait for CROOKED KINGDOM in September!

    WAKE OF VULTURESWAKE OF VULTURES

    Written by Lilah Bowen

An entirely, thrilling different journey into what we’re calling the Weird West … a Western story with a twist. Young Nettie Lonesome’s journey from virtual slave to fighter of paranormal threats is a surreal treat with loads of wonderful characters, and a world as rich and fascinating as any I’ve ever read. Fresh and entirely addictive, and the first in a series!

The School for Good and EvilTHE SCHOOL FOR GOOD AND EVIL

    Written by Soman Chainani

Yes, I’m WAY late to the party, but I’m thrilled by this fantastic series already. It’s a lush, compelling story that reads like a Grimm’s fairy tale I always knew, but just discovered. I’m only partway through and already crave the next installment. LOVE.

    Ages 8-12 | Publisher: HarperCollins | 2014 | ISBN-13: 978-0062104908

    Serpentine Cindy PonSERPENTINE

    Written by Cindy Pon

I adore wonderful settings, and Cindy’s China is just as rich and lush as fine brocade … and her characters!Gorgeous and heart-pounding. There’s a really great reason this book is a Junior Library Guild selection: because it’s just that good. I can’t wait to see what Cindy gives us next.

    Written by Alexandra Bracken

Oh, Alexandra, you had me at music, but you conquered me with time travel. I adore this book, full stop. It hits every one of my unfulfilled needs … the seductive power of music, a great historical setting, paranormal goodness, fantastic characters. I time-traveled too … right through an entire day, lost in her world. More please!

    Ages 14+ | Publisher: Disney-Hyperion | 2016 | ISBN-13: 978-1484715772

Those are my five for right now in YA … and I also read heavily outside of YA. So on my virtual bookshelf are A Head Full Of Ghosts by Paul Trembly, Seven for a Secret by Lyndsay Faye, The Rook by Daniel O’Malley, Dirty Magic by Jaye Wells, Staked by Kevin Hearne … yes, my reading tastes are far-ranging! And it’s a great time to be looking in any possible genre.

I’m delighted to be buying from so many amazing writers these days, and happy to share my picks with you!
