What to expect: Educational, Science, Sun & Moon, Empowerment

Jessica and Dave Dever have created an educational picture book that seeks to empower young readers through the use of scientific concepts. The husband-and-wife team have found clever ways to boost self-esteem and self-worth in this age-appropriate story.

Everyone knows the sun is hot stuff, but do they know just how much pull the moon has on our lives here on Earth? Probably not! As depicted in this picture book, not even the moon is aware. Each day when the sun rises, the moon must go away—and the moon feels sad to be second rate to the popular and fiery star.

“When Sun is out,

The people play.

When I am out,

They all go away.”

Seeing the moon feel down-and-out, a friendly cloud steps in to help him rise above these gloomy emotions and also help him understand his own purpose.

Simple rhymes are used to showcase the importance of the moon to the Earth. By personifying the moon (and the sun and a cloud) the authors have created a relatable perspective for a young audience—a perspective that they will readily respond to. The digital illustrations add personality to the characters and add visible emotion to match the feelings described in the text. The colors change with the time of the day and the mood of the scene.

A Moon Among Stars is a great entry-level science book, and at the same time it works as a lesson in self worth.
