Josh Funk’s Selfie with It’s Not Jack and the Beanstalk

This is me holding a copy of IT’S NOT JACK AND THE BEANSTALK. If you think I look afraid, you’d be correct.

    Josh Funk Selfie

See, if you’ve ever heard the story of Jack and the Beanstalk before, you should understand that this story—it’s not Jack and the Beanstalk. All I wanted to do was tell the traditional tale—you know, where Jack sells his cow, climbs the beanstalk, steals from the giant, etc. But Jack would NOT do what I wrote!

“I don’t want to sell my cow!”

“I don’t want to climb the beanstalk!”

“I don’t want to go into the giant’s house!”

Eventually, Jack even turned the giant against me. So beware. If you’re looking for a plain old fairy tale, IT’S NOT JACK AND THE BEANSTALK . . . is not Jack and the Beanstalk.

    Josh Funk’s Shelfie

These are two of the (twelve) built-in bookshelves in our Reading Room. We call it the “Reading Room” because while most people would call it the Living Room, we tend to do our living in all of the rooms. We also read in all of the rooms, but this is where we keep most of our books. These two particular shelves contain about half of the picture books we’ve accumulated.

    Josh Funk Shelfie

While they aren’t all that organized, most on the lower shelf have been collected in the last 6 years or so since I’ve started writing. About half or more are signed and many of the rest were written and/or illustrated by friends (you get to meet so many fun people when you’re a writer!). The top shelf has many that my that we read to my kids when they were younger, and some that date back to my own childhood (like CAP’N JOSHUA’S DANGEROUS DILEMMA).

    Written by Josh Funk

    Illustrated by Edwardian Taylor

Publisher’s Synopsis: Jack is not fond of the bossy narrator of his fairy tale! When Jack is told to trade his beloved cow Bessie for some magic beans, throw the beans out the window, climb the ENORMOUS beanstalk that sprouts overnight, and steal from a GIANT, he decides this fairy tale is getting out of control. In fact, he doesn’t want to follow the story line at all. Who says Jack needs to enter a life of daring, thievery, and giant trickery? He takes his story into his own hands—and you’ll never guess what happens next!

With laugh-out-loud dialogue and bold, playful art (including hidden fairy tale creatures for kids to find), this Jack and the Beanstalk retelling will have children rolling with laughter till Bessie the cow comes home.
