OwlCrate Jr. is a monthly book box subscription for kids ages 8 through 12 that certainly creates excitement around reading.

What’s unique about OwlCrate Jr. is that each month the box has a specific theme— the theme of the box we received was the exciting topic of Time Travel! Each box includes a newly released middle grade book (this means it’s highly unlikely your voracious readers will have had their hands on the title before) and a variety of items focused on the box’s theme—including exclusive treats from the author. Thanks to the careful curating, readers are instinctively led to explore and think about the topic on a deeper level.

Our Time Travel-themed box came with a copy of Lynne Jonell’s historical fiction adventure, Time Sight, along with a signed bookplate, a lovely fridge magnet with artwork from the cover, and a special letter from the author describing her inspiration for the book itself. How great for connecting the reader with the book itself! Also inside the box was a little booklet that included an interview with the author, three recommendations for what to read next if you love Time Sight, a fun book-inspired crossword, and an interview with one of the vendors that created a lovely wooden time turner magnetic brooch. There was also a collectable OwlCrate Jr. Time Travel patch, a pin decorated with flying clocks, and a smart-looking and well-made zipper pouch decorated with dinosaurs for those that would choose to travel back to a prehistoric time. Did we mention the Ancient Civilizations card game? As you can see, these boxes are very thoughtfully curated and are brilliant for nurturing curious minds and promoting conversation.

If you take a look at their website, it’s clear to see from previous boxes that the book selections are topnotch. As for the exclusive goodies, the OwlCrate Jr. team sources unique toys and tidbits from artisans and small businesses, so you know that you’re in for something unique and special. Getting started is as easy as subscribing for 1 to 6 months (starting at $27.99USD +shipping at the time of this review), receiving your owl-decorated box through the mail, and then enjoying the contents! For added fun, if you’re looking for a true book club community platform, this is certainly fostered through social media photo and hashtag challenges that include chances to win prizes. OwlCrate Jr. also hosts a monthly book chat via Instagram Live.

We give OwlCrate Jr. a double thumbs up! This subscription is a fantastic choice for all book lovers … even the reluctant kind whose inner bookworm will surely be summoned.
