What to Expect: Diversity, inclusion, multicultural identity.

What Are the Pieces to Your Puzzle is a beautiful and positive portrayal of multicultural identity that celebrates the mixed heritage we all share through the diverse people who make up our lives.

When asked “where do you come from?”, many children have just one answer: they can say they are from Spain, or the United States, or Ghana, for example. However, where we come from is not just where we were born—it is all the places that tie together all the people who make up our lives. Some children have parents from different heritages or were born somewhere other than where they live or where their parents are from. In What Are the Pieces to Your Puzzle?, the narrator explains how her multicultural identity makes her heritage complicated, rich, and full of love.

What Are the Pieces to Your Puzzle? is a celebration of the richness that we get from being made up of different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, and it invites readers to value their own internal diversity. Viktoriia Mykhalevych’s soft watercolor illustrations illuminate these ideas—her drawings glow with color and are composed of transparent layers that emphasize the fluidity of identity. The coloring pages at the end are a delightful bonus.

A lovely picture book, What Are the Pieces to Your Puzzle? is equally valuable in the classroom or as shared reading in the home.

    About the Illustrator

Viktoriia has been an illustrator of children’s books for more than five years. She graduated from the Lesya Ukrainka Eastern European National University and is a drawing teacher, finding her vocation in children’s books.

In childhood, she believed that if she painted the sun and put the picture in the window, it would surely be good weather. Often, it took several drawings, but the weather always got better! She has now grown up and believes that she will help children develop, learn, and become good people if she creates beautiful drawings. She sincerely hopes that her illustrations will appeal to children and become a new, bright step towards this goal!
