Bubba and Squirts City of Bones: book cover

Bubba and Squirts City of Bones

    Written by Sherry Ellis

    Ages: 8-12 | 104 Pages

    Publisher: Dancing Lemur Press, L.L.C. (2024) | ISBN-13: 9781939844989

What to Expect: Magic, adventure, history, travel, and family.

The Bubba and Squirt books are rollercoaster adventures through space and time, and City of Bones picks up the quest where Mayan Adventure leaves off—with Bubba and Squirt learning more and more about how to use Bubba’s powers and the magical Alux.

Bubba and Squirt’s father went missing in a very mysterious way. One minute, he was in a tank of water, doing an underwater escape trick, and the next, the tank was empty, and he was gone. Luckily, Bubba is a magician, and when Great-Great-Grandpa Jacob appears in a dream telling him the answer to his father’s disappearance can be found in the art museums of Paris, Bubba knows exactly how to get there.

With his sister Squirt in tow and the magical Alux protector in his pocket, he travels through the magic portal in the garden straight to the Paris Catacombs. To find their father, the two kids will need to outwit art thieves and defeat a terrifying Gargoyle demon—all while navigating a foreign city!

The characters are engaging and realistic; Bubba is sometimes impetuous, and both children are portrayed with enough doubts, fears, and desires to seem realistic as budding heroes. Without slowing down the fast pace of the story, the narrative weaves in a wealth of information about French history and culture, from typical foods to famous sites and people. At the end of the book, a map, glossary, bibliography, and even a recipe for French crepes helps readers dig deeper into French culture, making the story a fantastic educational resource as well as an entertaining read.

City of Bones is action-packed and informative, perfect for the middle-grade classroom.
