What to Expect: Animals and Humor

The novel Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl is a wickedly clever and funny read for children and adults alike. Dahl, the bestselling author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and The BFG, tells a story about a cunning fox named Mr. Fox who outwits three mean-spirited farmers – Boggis, Bunce, and Bean.

One ambitious fox and his family, a community of animals with uber-oddball characteristics, and a wonderful world of tunnels beneath the ground set the scene. When the vile farmers discover that Mr. Fox has been stealing food from them (a fox has got to eat), they join forces to capture the chicken-stealing thief. Mr. Fox, intent on outsmarting the farmers, devises the most fantastic plan and nobody outfoxes Fantastic Mr. Fox! Or can they? Readers need to hold onto their tails as Mr. Fox, his family, and that band of community animals fight for their lives in an escapade filled with a plethora of twists and turns.

The narrative is filled with thrilling twists and turns and is complemented by a splattering of charming illustrations by Quentin Blake. Dahl’s unique imagination shines through in the eccentric animal characters with quirky characteristics that he creates. The book is appropriate for new readers and beyond, offering a quick, engaging reading experience.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a must-read, showcasing Dahl’s exceptional storytelling abilities. It’s so gratifying—readers really “Dig!” it.
